Oligospermia

Oligospermia, sometimes called oligozoospermia, is the term used to describe a low sperm count.  A diagnosis is usually given following at least two semen analyses, where in both the sperm concentration was lower than 15 million sperm/mL of sample.

Oligospermia has been divided into the three categories of mild, moderate and severe, depending on the amount of sperm found in analysis.  Less than 5 million sperm/mL is considered severe.

Oligospermia & Fertility

While the chances of conceiving naturally are low for a couple where the male partner has a low sperm count, many couples facing this issue have been successful if the female partner is fertile.  Pregnancy can also be achieved using artificial insemination (IUI) or IVF, depending on the case.
